Gokitō (Special Prayer Request)
Gokitō is a privately requested prayer ceremony. It is a formal ritual to offer prayers to and seek blessings from the kamisama for specific requests. Gokitō is a deeply personal and spiritual ceremony that strengthens the connection between you and the kamisama. This ritual is not only a way to ask for divine favor and assistance, but also an oppotunity to express your gratitude, sincerity, and respect to the kami.
The ceremony: you will be seated quietly in the haiden (prayer hall). The ritual begins with shubatsu, a special prayer of purification before the main prayer. Next, the priest will recite norito (prayer) to the kami on your behalf. There is ringing of suzu (bells), as the clear sound cleanses the mind and body. You will then offer a tamagushi branch and personal prayers to the kami. At the close of the ceremony, you will receive a special ofuda (spiritual tablet).
Gokitō is conducted at the shrine. You may attend in person, or you may attend via Zoom. Or, you may request that the ceremony be conducted on your behalf without your participation. Any of these methods are welcome.
