Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does “Shin Mei” mean? Divine Light. “Shin” 神 is an alternative pronunciation for “Kami”—deity. “Mei” 明  means bright, or light. I particularly like that the kanji for Mei 明 is a combination of sun and moon.

  • What does “Matsuri” mean? To receive with gratitude. “Matsuri” 奉 is a derivation of the verb “tatematsuru.” The original kanji drawing for this word was an image of two hands holding a branch as an offering. Note: do not confuse this with 祭 matsuri which means festival or ceremony. Googling the “romaji” or English spelling of the term matsuri will not differentiate the meaning.
